Hello all
We receive quite a few reports about untaxed vehicles being used on the roads or are seemingly ‘abandoned’ at the side of the road or parked on grass verges in residential streets and when they are left for weeks/months/years on end, they do sometimes become an eyesore and these are the type of reports we get.
However, just in case you are not aware, you can report untaxed/SORN vehicles directly to the DVLA, please see the link below.
I personally have received a few emails reporting untaxed/SORN vehicles and with any contact I have from you I will always try and help even if that means signposting you to another agency who are more relevant to the issue. One of these vehicles I seized today as it was SORN, it was parked at the end of Fairfield Road near its junction with St Mary's Road New Romney however, the reason I've highlighted the DVLA is because I'd never get anything else done if I'm seizing untaxed/SORN vehicles all of the time so I'd be grateful if you could notify the DVLA in the first instance, thank you.
On the subject of vehicles and roads, Mill Road at its junction with Station Road, Lydd has been highlighted to me recently as some motorists are having difficulty in pulling out of Mill Road onto Station Road due to vehicles being parked too close to the junction. I appreciate that this is probably being replicated in many other locations across the Marsh but I'm using this one as an example having been reported recently. Rule 243 of The Highway Code states You must not park within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction unless signs specifically allow it, to ensure visibility and safety for all road users.
We (the police) don't routinely deal with parking issues as this is the remit of council parking enforcement teams so like reporting untaxed vehicles to the DVLA, with parking issues it will be a report to the council please.
Just to pre-empt the comments on social media ‘what do you deal with then?!’ (tongue in cheek!) some things that you'd be forgiven for thinking that we deal with as a matter of course, we don't always, but as I said above, I will always try and help in some way or another, I won't ignore your request!
If a vehicle is being used or not and it is on the public highway whether that's road, pavement or verge it needs to be insured, taxed and have a current MOT. Many people will be unaware of ‘Continuous Insurance Enforcement’ (CIE) have a read in the link below if you're interested.
Sorry, I know that this can be a bit of a boring subject but I'm sure we all agree that it's a very important subject.
Thank you Steve.
